Senate Requests Expenditure Report on US$5M Ebola Fund

first_imgThe Liberian Senate is requesting President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf as head of the National Ebola Task Force, to make report to the Senate on how the amount of US$5 million approved for the fight of Ebola was expended. The Senators’ decision taken Tuesday, September 23, during  plenary was prompted by a communication from their colleagues, Senators Nyonblee Kangar-Lawrence, Sando Dazoe Johnson and Geraldine Doe-Sherif, requesting for an expenditure report on US$5 million approved two months ago used by the National Ebola Task Force, to help  contain the Ebola epidemic. In proffering the motion for the Senate’s action, Bong County Senator Henry Yallah asked his colleagues’ communication be accepted and recommendations therein be adopted, “and that this plenary requests a report from the President as the head of the Ebola Task Force who requested for the money that was approved by this Senate, of the expenditure of US$5 million by next sitting on Tuesday and that copies be made available to all Senators.”Earlier before the unanimous vote, the Senators went into debate that lasted for well over three hours, with each Senator giving supporting reasons why the report was needed now.Maryland County Senator John Ballout, one of the Senators who supported the need for a report and audit, regretted that since the approval of the amount, the situation on containing the disease continues to deteriorate.“We have to step up to the plate and take charge. Audit is not an attempt to fight the Executive, but rather it will help build confidence among the people who are starting to question the Task Force’s seeming lack of accountability; in fact our power has no limitation in asking for report,” Senator Ballout, who Chairs the Senate Committee on Public Works, asserted.Nimba County Senator Thomas Grupee put up a stiff fight, recalling a portion of President Sirleaf’s letter to the Senate in which she promised the lawmakers that a comprehensive audit would be conducted at the end the process. He described it as unfair, his colleagues’ communication that is now requesting an expenditure report from the Ebola Task Force, an argument supported by outgoing Grand Gedeh County Senator Isaac Nyenabo, who, too, believe that it was unfair to ask for a report in the middle of the process.Gbarpolu County Senator Armah Zulu Jallah recalled that during a recent Legislative leadership meeting with the President, she promised to send the report in question to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and not the Senate.Senators, who confirmed that the President has already sent report on US$5 million to the House of Representatives, enquired from Senate Pro Tempore Gbehzohngar Findley whether he was in possession of same report he answered: “I have not received any report on the US$5 million, nor the Senate.”Senator Yallah, before proffering his motion, reminded his colleagues that his county, Bong is one of the hardest hit by the Ebola epidemic, disclosing that a town in Bong County has recently reported 13 deaths from Ebola. “We must learn from our past mistake and ensure that we don’t release a dime if the Executive fails to report on the US$5 million.”Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Arthur talks about his devotion to Xavi and Iniesta

first_imgBrazilian Arthur revealed how much he admires both Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta, he had to touch one of them to make sure they were real.In what is turning out to be a fantastic first season for Arthur at FC Barcelona, comparing him to Xavi and Iniesta is almost inevitable due to his style of play that is so similar to those two legends of the game. The Brazilian midfielder has been growing as a player for Barcelona, but he has managed to stay grounded and doesn’t mind geeking out when he talks about either of his two idols. It’s safe to say that Arthur gets a little bit more excited when he talks about Iniesta than Xavi, but his game is a lot more similar to that of Hernandez’s and he doesn’t shy away from how proud he feels for it.“When I met Iniesta, I had to touch him just to see if he was flesh and bone,” said Arthur on Mundo Derpotivo.“He is an idol I have followed since I was younger, that moment when I met him was incredible. I got goosebumps just thinking about it.”“I didn’t know he was coming and I was very pleasantly surprised. He actually greeted me very well.”“I have to thank him because he was the nicest to me, this moment will stay with me for the rest of my life,” he added.David Villa, FC BarcelonaTop 10 players who played for both Barcelona and Valencia Boro Tanchev – September 14, 2019 Time to talk about the best players who represented both Barcelona and Valencia, prior to their La Liga encounter at Camp Nou this evening.Arthur also reacted to the time Xavi said he felt identified with his style of play: “That was also another thing I thought was a lie,” he continued.“I don’t really follow the newspapers, I dedicate my free time to watching series or studying Spanish, my mom is the one who tells me all about these things.”“I thought it was a joke. To me, Xavi and Iniesta are the best midfielders I ever saw play.”“I wish Xavi played for many more years because I can learn more from him, but he will retire next summer. I’m pretty sure he will be just as good when he becomes a manager,” he concluded. The Arthur – Xavi likenings are true.. pic.twitter.com/wSnBQkoAPu— BU Videos (@BuVideos) December 17, 2018last_img read more

Esquire Cares Part I

first_imgI wrote a while back that most magazines were not particularly concerned with that ambassador to the reader, the table of contents page. Still true—but Esquire is an exception to the rule. TOChinations at the magazine predate January’s redesign—the book has a history of putting collaged, structuralist, and sometimes even more whimsical arrangements on its contents page. One (from late last Fall) put content in the form of an array of cubes—it looked more like a recent NYT infographic than anything else. Stunning and inefficient, that version took four pages rather than the usual two.None of the magazine’s recent contents pages are your parents TOC, into which text is unceremoniously poured and routinely formatted. As a whole the pages vary in interest (to my mind the “issue map” version [above, bottom] is a hum-drum take on old gimmick of previewing spreads—first done (I think) by Talk) but as a group they delightfully show the potential of the page.[EDITOR’S NOTE: Buy Jandos new book!]last_img read more

House Appropriators Want to Accelerate Cleanup at BRAC Sites

first_imgThe milcon spending measure, which was approved unanimously by the House Appropriations Committee on Wednesday, calls for spending $230 million next year for past base closure rounds, including cleanup and ongoing operations and maintenance. DOD requested only $205 million for the account in FY 2017, but both recommendations represent a cut from the $266 million Congress allocated in the current year. The committee report, which includes a listing of milcon projects by installation, is available on the committee website. “The Committee recognizes that many factors hinder the cleanup of BRAC sites. However, the Committee believes that strategic investments can lead to quicker cleanups and faster turnover of DOD property to the local community,” the report states. The milcon spending bill likely won’t reach the chamber floor until May 15 unless House Republicans are able to strike a compromise on a budget framework. A split among the GOP on the topline discretionary spending levels included in last year’s budget deal so far has prevented House leaders from bringing an FY 2017 budget resolution to the floor. Dan Cohen AUTHOR Overall, the legislation would provide $7.9 billion for military construction and family housing in FY 2017, representing a $305 million drop from current year funding but a $250 million increase over DOD’s request. “We can’t do it without a waiver of the rule until May 15, on the floor,” Appropriations Chairman Harold Rogers (R-Ky.) said about the timing of floor debate on the measure. “Without a budget, you can’t,” said Rogers, reported CQ Roll Call. The Appropriations Committee adopted an amendment prohibiting funding for the next phase of construction of a Joint Intelligence Analysis Complex Consolidation in Croughton, England, unless authorized in the FY 2017 defense authorization bill. House Appropriators added $25 million to the administration’s fiscal 2017 budget request for the cleanup of installations closed during past base closure rounds to accelerate remediation efforts by the Army and Navy, according to the committee report accompanying the FY 2017 military construction-veterans affairs spending bill.last_img read more

BMW M850i First Edition brings limitededition looks to 400 cars

first_img 2019 Jeep Cherokee can handle the rough stuff Acura RDXThe third-generation Acura RDX squeaks into the top ten list with larger proportions, plenty of interior space and better handling than its predecessor. Forward collision warning with collision mitigation braking, adaptive cruise control that works even in low-speed traffic, lane-keeping steering assist and road departure mitigation are all standard across the board. Like its MDX counterpart, the RDX is available with the A-Spec styling package. The RDX sports a 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine. Output is stated at 273 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, and it’s mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The new RDX is built in East Liberty, Ohio. 71 Photos Chevrolet CorvetteMoving up from the 10th-place slot last year is the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette. While we’ve all been ogling the new mid-engine Corvette, it’s easy to forget what a performance bargain the current-generation ‘Vette is. From the base trim to the Grand Sport to the bonkers ZR1, the Corvette is an American icon.My preference is for the Grand Sport, which strikes a perfect balance between everyday drivability and canyon-carving performance. The 6.2-liter V8 puts out 460 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. You can get it with a seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, but the kicker is the borrowed chassis and aero parts from the beefier Z06. Like I said, perfect balance. The Corvette is made in Bowling Green, Kentucky. BMW,Enlarge ImageIt’s all in a day’s work for the Jeep Cherokee, the most American-made car in 2019. Jeep With high trade tensions looming and increasing talk of tariffs, more and more consumers are looking to buy American. Cars.com has released its annual American Made Index, showcasing companies that use the most American-sourced parts and labor in their vehicles. The results may surprise you.Cars.com analyzed more than 100 US-built vehicles for five key data points: manufacturing location, parts sourcing, US employment, engine sourcing and transmission sourcing. You might think something like the Ford F-150 would top the list, but it drops from its No. 5 spot for 2018 and out of the top 10 completely. Even the first-place holder, the Jeep Cherokee, is a pretty global product. It’s a Jeep, sure, but that brand is part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, an Italian-owned business.Cars.com surveyed 1,000 people and found that half are concerned about automotive import tariffs, with 41% saying they are unsure if tariffs would make them more likely to buy American. Either way, we’re big fans of all the vehicles on this list. These days, buying American doesn’t necessarily mean sticking with a US-based automaker. This crossover-that-looks-like-a-truck provides a better ride than a traditional pickup and gets an awesome lockable trunk right in the floor of the bed. And it doesn’t do the truck stuff too badly, either, as it’s able to carry 1,860 pounds of payload and tow 3,500 pounds. The Ridgeline is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 good for 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. That is channeled through a six-speed automatic transmission with available all-wheel drive. It’s built in Lincoln, Alabama. Shown here in the tough ZR2 Bison off-road spec, the Chevy Colorado is an excellent truck and one of the two midsize pickups you can get with a diesel engine. Adding to the ZR2’s two-inch lift and front and rear locking differentials, the Bison gets beefier skid plates (trust me, that’s a good thing), steel bumpers and integrated recovery points. Heck, you can even get a snorkel.Base models get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission, but a more popular choice is the 3.6-liter V6 gas engine with 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Meanwhile, the 2.8-liter diesel pumps out 186 horsepower and a delicious 369 pound-feet of twist and is mated to a six-speed automatic. The Chevy Colorado is built in Wentzville, Missouri. Honda OdysseyThe feature-rich Honda Odyssey minivan also retains its number-two slot from last year’s list. While the 2019 model doesn’t see any changes from last, it’s still a darn good choice for families on the go with reconfigurable seats, Wi-Fi and an excellent rear-seat entertainment system. The Cabin Watch video system lets parents keep an eye on their little darlings without turning around in their seats, while Cabin Talk amplifies their voice so no yelling is required. The Odyssey is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 rated for 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Most trims get a nine-speed automatic but the top Touring and Elite trims now use a 10-speed automatic with stop-start technology. The Honda Odyssey is made in Lincoln, Alabama. 2019 GMC Sierra Denali review: So close to greatness BMW Acura MDXMoving up one slot to sixth place on the American Made Index is the non-hybrid variant of the Acura MDX. With its SH-AWD system, the MDX is one of the better handling midsize luxury crossovers, and for 2019 the company gives us the A-Spec treatment with a new front fascia and side skirts, 20-inch wheels, wider exhaust tips, unique gauges, a new steering wheel, carbon fiber trim and various Alcantara interior touches. However, both the standard and A-Spec models get a 3.5-liter V6 engine, rated for 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque going through a nine-speed automatic transmission. The Acura MDX is made in East Liberty, Ohio.  Honda PassportThe Honda Passport is a new (well, reborn) entry to both the Honda lineup and the American Made Index. This midsize crossover comes to the fray with great driving dynamics and plenty of tech like the standard Honda Sensing suite of active safety features. An available 8-inch touchscreen gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot.Under the hood is the stalwart 3.5-liter V6 producing 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. However unlike the Ridgeline, the Passport sends that power through a nine-speed automatic transmission. Having said that, just like the Ridgeline, this is the only powertrain available. Ahead of the BMW 8 Series’ release, BMW hopped back on that bandwagon with the M850i First Edition.BMW unveiled the M850i xDrive Coupe First Edition on Monday. Offered on just 400 cars, this comprehensive upgrade covers interior and exterior aesthetics, with some additional flourishes by way of a couple optional packages available on other M850i models. That quantity is the worldwide limit, so each market will receive far fewer — the UK, for example, only gets 10 of these cars.On the outside, BMW’s in-house Individual program applied its Frozen Barcelona Blue paint to the body, a color developed just for this car. There’s also a set of 20-inch alloy wheels finished in black. From the options menu, the car ditches its chrome trim in favor of gloss-black bits, and carbon fiber adorns the roof and other various trim pieces.Inside, BMW Individual shows up once again, this time adding a two-tone interior made from blue and white Merino leather. That color combination extends to the steering wheel and the Alcantara suede headliner, both of which are finished in blue. The interior is finished off with piano black trim, unique badges, cut glass knobs and buttons, as well as a Bowers & Wilkins surround-sound system. Mayor of London Interview with UKIP candidate Peter Whittle

first_img Londons ongoing affordable housing crisis and the issue of immigration to the capital city cannot be separated, according to Ukips Mayoral candidate. Peter Whittle told IBTimes UK that there are simply too many people chasing too few houses and rising migration numbers to Britain meant that it was hard for developers to plan ahead. You cant really just talk about supply without talking about demand. You have got to know how many people you are planning for and at the moment we have absolutely no way of doing that, he said. The comments come after the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that net migration to the UK had hit a record high of 330,000 in the year to March and followed a report from UBS Global Real Estate Bubble Index, which found that London house prices were the most overvalued across the worlds major cities.Whittle also promised to introduce a registry of brownfield sites across London in bid to incentivise developers to build on them if he succeeded Boris Johnson and entered City Hall in 2016. But the Ukip culture spokesman is up against stiff competition in shape of Labours Sadiq Khan and Tory MP Zac Goldsmith. The latest opinion poll from ICM, of more than 2,000 London voters between 16 and 24 September, put Labour on 40%, the Conservatives on 36%, the Greens on 7% and Ukip and the Liberal Democrats on 6% each. However, Whittle claimed the electorate perceived his party to be more authentic than his rivals. People really do know where we are coming from in Ukip and they do know that we believe what we say and we say what we mean – I dont think they feel that about the other candidates, the New Culture Forum founder said.We have to make sure that new people hear our message and Im very, very optimistic about that. But we do have a very strong brand – to use that terrible word – and I think that is something that I will be offering that other candidates simply dont have. Closelast_img read more

Indians again top the chart of foreign investors in Dubai property

first_imgDubaiReutersIndians again topped the list of foreign investors in property  in the Emirates as they bought property worth Rs 42,000 crore in Dubai from January 2016 to June 2017, according to data released by the Dubai Land Department (DLD).The data from the DLD show a jump of Rs 12,000 crore from 2014, when the department recorded Indian buyers investing Rs 30,000 crore that year, the Times of India reported.”For years, Indians have consistently been the most prolific non-GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) buyers of Dubai real estate. From January 2016 to June 2017, they bought property worth more than Rs 42,000 crore in the emirate,” said a statement from Dubai Property Show. Also, apartments were the most preferred property type, with 33 percent share in properties bought. The next top pick was villas at 17 percent. Commercial property stood at 9 percent and lands stood at 6 percent. About 35 percent were not decided when answering the survey questions.According to a report by international property consultant Knight Frank, Indian homebuyers have from 2012 to 2017 seen an overall return of 49.3 percent, the highest in the world.Dubai is one of the most affordable property destinations around, and the strengthening of the Indian currency further pushed the investors to buy more.”The UAE’s safe haven status, stable economic growth and bottomed out prices have been the key factors for attracting Indian realty investments in Dubai. In addition, many Indians find Dubai as their base for business between India and the wider Europe and Middle East,” said Dawood Al Shezawi, CEO, Strategic Marketing & Exhibitions — organiser of the International Property Show in Dubai.Dubai is one of the favourite destinations for the Indians for other reasons as well, like high capital gains, great return on investment, a tax-free environment, and more transparent deals.”The profits on properties in Dubai in the form of rents and resale are high. The Dubai realty market has everything on offer — from high-end luxury to affordable housing, making it a perfect destination for Indian investments. This year’s edition of International Property Show will have some of the best properties on offer, allowing serious Indian buyers to make deals and agreements right at the show,” added Al Shezawi. However, while property prices in Dubai have been attractive for the last few years, prices in London have also plunged after Britain voted to leave the European Union, making London another attractive and realistic market for high-end Indian investors. London PropertyReutersAccording to Parth Mehta, managing director of Paradigm Realty, global investments will skyrocket in 2017 due to the interest of Indian investors and the fundamentals of Dubai and London’s property markets.”With steady growth, the real estate market will pervade every sphere of economic activity. Moreover, friendly bilateral policies and an influx of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) will boost business sentiments,” said Mehta.Reports had suggested in August that Indians are now the second-largest prime Central London Property buyers after overtaking Middle East purchasers driven by a fall in the Gulf investors’ demand due to economic and political uncertainty and a weakening pound in Britain.last_img read more
