Nova Scotia Athletes Earn Increased Investment

Provincial sport organizations will receive an additional $150,000 for athletes across the province, Health Promotion Minister Rodney MacDonald announced today, May 31. The increase will be added to Health Promotion’s annual block funding program that supports provincial sport organizations. The funding will enable provincial sport organizations to offer new programs, hire new people and provide more support and opportunities to meet the growing needs of Nova Scotia’s athletes and coaches. “Coaches, volunteers and athletes will all benefit from this funding increase,” said Mr. MacDonald. “Our partnerships with Sport Nova Scotia and provincial sport organizations are important to providing the best sport experience possible and together we can continue working towards a common goal — a more active, healthy Nova Scotia.” Sport Nova Scotia, provincial sport organizations and their community partners are the main delivery system for providing sport to young people in the province. Across the province 70 per cent of sport organizations have experienced an increase in membership over the past year. Nova Scotia Health Promotion encourages these results and understands that more support and partnerships are needed to continue to promote youth involvement in sport. Research shows that when children are exposed to sport at a young age they are more likely to continue that behaviour and grow into active adults. “This new funding will help our members continue to provide services and programs across the province that people want and need,” said Jamie Ferguson, CEO of Sport Nova Scotia. “We are pleased with the government’s ongoing support for sport and physical activity and look forward to working with them as our members put this funding to work.”last_img
