UN calls for int’l help amid swarms of locusts in East Africa

first_imgAFRICA – TheUnited Nations (UN) has called for international help to fight huge swarms ofdesert locusts sweeping through East Africa. Ethiopia, Kenyaand Somalia are all struggling with “unprecedented” and “devastating” swarms ofthe food-devouring insects, the FAO said.  The agencyfears locust numbers could grow 500 times by June.  Ethiopia andSomalia have not faced an infestation on this scale for 25 years, while Kenyahas not seen a locust threat this size for 70 years, the FAO said.(BBC)center_img Swarms of locusts are seen almost covering the sky in East Africa.
